8 Steps to Evaluating a Used Laptop Computer

If you have considered purchasing a used laptop computer you might first want to review the following step by step evaluation process to ensure that you get a good quality used laptop computer.

Step 1-Find out what external hardware is included with the computer. At a bare minimum, the laptop computer will need a power cord. Other options that might be included are an external mouse, keyboard and floppy disk drive. Additional hardware offerings could include a microphone, speakers, printer, scanner, external wireless card and battery.

Step 2-Find out what internal hardware is included with the computer. The most popular internal hardware component is the internal wireless network card. Other internal hardware components include things such as a video card, DVD drive, CD Rom drive, and a sound card.

Step 3-Before you even consider purchasing a used laptop computer, ask if the computer components are original, repaired or replaced.

Step 4-Ask the seller if the machine is in full working condition. Some questions you might ask include a. does the machine power on and off properly; b. is the monitor clear without scratches or flaws; c. does the battery work properly; d. does the computer work properly without the battery installed and, if so, how long does the battery stay charged.

Step 5-Determine what operating system is installed in the used laptop computer. The newest version of Windows, called Windows Vista, is not always compatible with all softwares. You will need to find out what operating system is running the computer and research if that operating system will run the software that you intend to install.

Step 6-Find out what software is being included with the computer.

Step 7-Thoroughly research competitive prices for the make, model and year of the used laptop computer that you are considering buying. This is easy to determine by reviewing the bids on similar products on Ebay.

Step 8-If the machine is a fairly new machine, it might still be covered under warranty. If so, ask the seller if the warranty is transferrable to you upon purchase.

What is application conferencing?
If you have Citrix installed, it will allow you he ability to interactively work in real time with peers on any published application.

Teams are able to work simultaneously within an application seeing each others edits and modifications.

Participants are able to collaborate independently of where they are located - so long as they have access to the published MetaFrame Conferencing Manager client.

How do I create an instant conference?
You may create an instant conference by clicking on the Start Conference icon.

Follow the wizard and begin collaborating with your peers in just a few clicks.

How do I start a scheduled conference?
You may start a conference by double clicking the conference from the list or by selecting the conference from the list and then clicking on the start icon located on the left.

What applications are available in a conference?
All MetaFrame XP published applications in the farm may be included in a conference.

How do I add additional applications to an active conference?
While in full screen mode, just click the application list in the auto hide toolbar located at the top of the screen.

The application list will show all available applications to the conference.

Double clicking an application in the list will launch that application within the conference.

In the windowed view, the tabs located to the left contain the application list.

Double clicking an application in this list will launch that application within the conference.

Can I add additional applications when starting a conference?
When starting a conference you can select the initial application to be launched.

Once in the conference you can then add additional applications as needed.

How do I prevent others from joining a conference while I do preparation work?
Select Attendee List Only option when creating the conference but leave the list empty.

The conference will then only allow the host to participate.

Once the conference preparation work is complete, the host then adds you to the conference and they will then be able see the conference in the list and join.

When I click the whiteboard button, a whiteboard does not launch?
The whiteboard tool requires that Microsoft Paint be installed on the conference servers.

Verify that mspaint.exe is available installed.

How do I set my default for conference start up to always be full screen?
From the MetaFrame Conferencing client interface, select Tools from the menu bar and the Options.

From there you may define when full screen is used; Always, Never etc.

How do I enable or disable full screen dialog transparency?
From the MetaFrame Conferencing client interface, select Tools from the menu bar and the Options.

From there you may define whether dialog transparency is on or off.

How do I schedule a conference?
Scheduled conferences are managed through your Microsoft Outlook calendar.

How do I schedule a conference without Microsoft Outlook integration?
Only instant conferences will be available without Microsoft Outlook integration.

MetaFrame Conferencing Manager leverages the Outlook calendar for the central management of all your conferences and meetings.

Is Microsoft Outlook integration required?
Microsoft Outlook integration provides the ability to you to schedule conferences ahead of time.

There is no requirement for Microsoft Outlook and choosing not to utilize it will not impact the ability or functionality of instant conferences.

What is the custom form for scheduling conferences?
Citrix has provided the option for a custom form to be used when scheduling conferences.

By using the custom form, an additional setting that defines who besides the organizer may start a conference is available.

How do I access the custom form?
The custom form may be accessed in two ways.

First you may find a button on your Outlook menu bar.

By clicking this, the custom form will open and you can schedule your conference just as you would a normal Outlook meeting.

It may also be accessed by selecting from the menu bar File, New, Choose Form and then select the form from the list.

What is the difference between using the standard form verses custom form?
The custom form may be optionally used instead of the standard Outlook appointment meeting form.

By using the custom form, an additional setting that defines who besides the organizer may start a conference is available.

Using the standard appointment meeting form in Outlook will still allow the ability to start it as a MetaFrame Conferencing Manager meeting.

How do I prevent others from starting my scheduled conferences?
By using the custom form, an additional setting that defines which you may start a conference besides the organizer is available.

Is using the custom Outlook form to schedule a conference required?
No. The custom form is provided to enable the ability to restrict who may start a conference other than the organizer.

Scheduling a meeting through the standard appointment form will not prevent the organizer or other invitees, from being able to start that meeting as a conference within MetaFrame conferencing Manager.

Why does Microsoft Outlook need to be installed on the same server as the MetaFrame Conferencing Manager client?
When the MetaFrame Conferencing Manager client launches, it will query your calendar through Microsoft Outlook.

A defined Outlook profile needs to exist under the same credentials as those launching the client component.

If these requirements are met, the calendar entries in that Persons Outlook will be reflected within the conference list in the client.

Do I have to use Microsoft Outlook on a published server?
While Microsoft Outlook must be on the same server as the MetaFrame Conferencing Manager client is published, it does not need to be published or accessed from the server.

You may schedule and coordinate meetings with Microsoft Outlook as they currently do.

If you want access to the custom form, it will be available through the organizational forms library or by clicking the custom Outlook menu button. See under How do I access the custom form?.

The add in menu button must be installed properly in order for the form to work i.e. using a local copy of Microsoft Outlook requires the add in to be installed for the hot button to work

What if my Outlook calendar meetings are not showing up in the conference list?
First verify that there are meetings in your calendar for that day.

Also verify that Microsoft Outlook is installed and configured with your profile on the same server as the client is published. Will require verification from your MetaFrame administrator.

Finally, ensure that you are launching the client with the same credentials as your Outlook profile uses. Again, may require verification from your administrator.

When launching MetaFrame Conferencing Manager, I am receiving a security dialog from Outlook?
This is potentially a result of an incomplete installation and configuration of the Outlook custom form.

For Outlook version 2000 SP2 and later, Microsoft added a security feature to protect against scripted viruses.

This security feature will protect you against malicious scripts.

When adding a scripted form or add in, part of the process is to register that component with Outlook to let it know it is not a virus.

Unless this step is taken, Outlook will continue to notify you that the script add in is potentially harmful.

Microsoft Exchange 2003

What is Exchange 2003 and why the change?

Exchange 5.5 is the current software that runs the Exchange/Outlook email system used by some University departments. The new software, Exchange 2003, is much more stable and secure than Exchange 5.5, and provides additional functionality. For example, it provides some enhanced spam email filtering within your mailbox, as well as an improved web client.

What new features will I find useful with Exchange 2003?
Outlook Web Access (OWA) on Exchange 2003 has significantly improved, and provides nearly the same functionality as the Outlook software on your PC. We recommend that you use Internet Explorer as that browser will provide you with the best experience with Outlook. Other browsers will work but may not have the full functionality of Internet Explorer.
The URL to access OWA has changed for Exchange 2003. It is webmail.ur.rochester.edu

What email software works with Exchange 2003?
We recommend Outlook 2000 or newer as the preferred PC email client. For Mac users we recommend Entourage.

After I move to Exchange 2003, will I still be able to view other people’s calendars on the old Exchange service?
Once you’ve been moved to Exchange 2003, you will not be able to open other people’s calendars, folders, email, etc. until they have been moved to Exchange 2003. However, you will still be able to schedule appointments with them and see when they have openings or have appointments scheduled, otherwise known as ‘free / busy times’.

• Previous Exchange 5.5 rules you may have set up Rules that you may have set up to process email automatically in Exchange 5.5 may need to be set up again in Exchange 2003. You will need to export and then import the rules after you move to Exchange 2003 for them to work. Plan on exporting your existing rules a few days before you are scheduled to migrate. If you forget to do this, the rules will be lost and you will have to rebuild them from scratch. You can find instructions on how to export and import existing rules here:

• Space to store your email
In Exchange 2003, you will have 250MB of disk space for your email. Once you reach 200MB or more, Exchange 2003 will notify you you’re nearing your limit. Once you reach 250MB, Exchange 2003 will notify you and will prevent you from sending email until you fall below 250MB. You will always receive email, even if you’ve used up all 250MB of your Exchange disk space. Click here for help on keeping your mailbox under the storage limits.

• Personal Address Books
Your personal address book will come across in the migration if it is part of Exchange.

• Public Folders
All “Free/Busy” works across the 5.5/2003 boundary, and you will be able to schedule meetings with anyone, regardless of whether they are on Exchange 5.5 or have moved to Exchange 2003. Similarly, you will also be able to view Public Folders in both the Exchange 5.5 and the Exchange 2003 environments.

• Pure Message
If you utilize the Pure Message spam filtering service, it will continue to work as it did before you moved to Exchange 2003.

• Multiple mailboxes for one customer account
Exchange 2003 only allows an account to own a single mailbox.

• Outlook Express
We do not recommend Outlook Express. If you do not own a license for regular Outlook, we suggest you use the Outlook Web Access (OWA) client at https://webmail.ur.rochester.edu.

• Eudora
We recommend using Outlook with Exchange 2003. If you currently use Eudora on a PC, we recommend using the Outlook Web Access (OWA) client at https://webmail.ur.rochester.edu.

• Terminal Service
If you utilize the Terminal Server service to access your email, you will need to ensure that it knows that you’ve moved to Exchange 2003. After you log onto Terminal Server, you will need to tell your Outlook profile to point to the new Exchange 2003 server.

• Search folders in Outlook 2003
Any search folders you may have set up in Outlook 2003 will not come across in the transition. You will need to re-create them after the move.

• Treo Smartphone users
Users of Treo 650 series smartphones are able to use Exchange ActiveSync to wirelessly sync your email and calendar. This is accomplished by using VersaMail 3.0. ITS has not fully tested this functionality and recommends that Verizon Treo 650 users upgrade to the new Treo 700w (Verizon subscribers only) with windows mobile 5.0 This smartphone allows easy wireless syncing of your email, calendar, contact and tasks. Windows Patches for Daylight Savings

Microsoft may send an update for the Daylight Savings Time Difference

1) Check to see if you have the Yellow Notification Shield in your system tray.

2) If you have this shield, please click on it and do an Express Install

3) Please do not Cancel out of the process while the updates are being installed

4) After the updates are completed, Reboot.

Internet Explorer Error 403 Forbidden Access

This specification defines the Protocol referred to as "HTTP/1.1".

This protocol includes more stringent requirements than HTTP/1.0 in order to ensure reliable implementation of its features.

Similar to Error 401, this error is usually caused because
special permission is needed to access the website in that a password and/or username may not be correctly registered on the websites database. Other times the website server may not have the proper permissions set up on its directories.

Get permission from the Website Administrator

Clear your IE settings and Reboot.

You will get a pop up Welcome page from the Website Administrator and you will need to enter the user name and password that they provide you.

MS Outlook and Office XP Software Conflict

Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2002 may stop responding when both Office XP and Office 2003 are on the same computer

If you try to start either Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Outlook 2002 after you install Microsoft Office XP on a computer that already has Microsoft Office 2003 installed, both Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2002 may crash when you try to start them.

This problem occurs if you have both Office 2003 and Office XP installed on the same computer. Sometimes this problem occurs if you used the Office XP install disc at any point during your Office 2003 installation process. When you install Office XP on a computer that already has Office 2003 installed, Office XP installs successfully, but both Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2002 may not function as expected because you cannot have both versions of Microsoft Outlook installed on the same computer.

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods to remove all versions of Outlook on your computer, and then reinstall Outlook 2003.

How to remove Outlook 2003

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

3. Click the version of Microsoft Office that you want to remove, and then click Change.

4. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.

5. Click to clear the Microsoft Office Outlook check box, and then click Update.

6. Click OK.

How to remove Outlook 2002

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

3. Click the version of Office that you want to remove, and then click Change.

4. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.

5. Click Microsoft Outlook for Windows, and then click Not Available.

6. Click Update.

7. Click OK.

Getting Started

The screen consists of two parts:

Completely at the left you will see a maximum of 6 indicators, and the largest part of the screen shows 6 digits.

The indicators show the validity of the 6 digits in the screen.

One indicator will disappear about every 10 seconds.

10 Seconds after the last indicator has disappeared the 6 digits will change.

Double-click the Ipass Connect icon on your desktop.

This will bring up the connection screen.

The very first time only, before you make a connection, you will need to select the modem to use.

Click Options

Click Settings.

Activate tab Dialup and select the modem to use.

Click OK to confirm your choice.

The first time, you need to choose the country where you are.

You can change this in case you travel abroad.

Change the country to preference

Leave City and Area Code blank

Select one of the "All Cities-NL" numbers; do not choose a toll free number (see below)

Click Connect to make your first connection

The password is what was provided for you.

Note: you cannot click the box Save password.

Then click OK.

IPass will make a connection.

Please Note, dialing may take more than half a minute, depending upon line speed and computer speed. 36 Seconds is actually pretty fast.

It may take up to 60 seconds. Please be patient. Then another 15 to 30 seconds are required to authenticate you.

The very first time ONLY, you leave the PIN number blank.

In the Token field, key in the number that is visible on your token.

Don't change any other fields and click Connect.

Now you must choose a PIN and key it in.

Some recommend you use the PIN code from your bankcard, credit card or phone card, Your VPN Doctor recommends something else you can remember easily to further insure your protection of other PINS.

Think carefully here; you will have to use this PIN for as long as you have the token.

Do not write down your PIN.

Never give your PIN to anyone else.

If you forget your PIN, it cannot retrieved.

If the PIN was accepted, wait for the token to change (very important!).

Fill out the response field.

What you fill out is the combination of your PIN and the digits in the token.

So, if your PIN is 1234 and the token displays 987654, you key in 1234987654.

Note: After this initial logon, key in the PIN in the PIN field only and, in the response field, key in token number only.

Read the security warning and click OK if you accept the terms.

Note: It may not be possible to do a Send/Receive in Outlook or start another program immediately after connecting.

This situation will correct itself within 60 seconds.

When you are done working, you are ready to disconnect.

Performing a Soft Reset

• Use the reset tool to gently press the reset button on the back of the Treo

System Reset
• A system reset, also called a safe or warm reset, tells the Treo to stop what it’s doing and start over again without loading any system extras

• If the Treo loops or freezes during a soft reset, a system reset may help

• Performing a system reset allows getting out of an endless loop in order to uninstall a third-party application causing the looping

• Unless the battery is extremely low, a system reset should not affect data

• If performing a system reset and disable conflicting applications is needed, always end the process with a soft reset

• This returns the Treo to normal operation

Performing a System, Warm, or Safe Reset
• To perform the System Reset (AKA Warm Reset, or Safe Reset)

Turning Wireless Mode OFF

• Press and hold the Wireless Mode button again to turn off Wireless Mode

Internet Explorer Cannot find Server or DNS Error

If you can access another website address, the problems is with the page you were trying to visit and you should contact the site owner directly to pursue the matter.

1. Delete your temporary Internet files and cookies. To do this, follow these steps

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel

Double-click Internet Options

Click the Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button

Then click the Delete Cookies button and confirm this decision by clicking Yes at the next prompt

Next click the Delete Files button and confirm this decision by clicking Yes at the next prompt

Click OK to apply these settings

Now shutdown and restart your computer and test your connection to see if this has resolved the problem

2. If you are using any firewall/internet security/proxy software such as Norton or Zone Alarms try temporarily disabling it. This should be done by breaking your Internet connection and then reconnecting and testing on reliable websites such as www.google.co.uk.

If you can see pages with the firewall disabled you will have to investigate your firewall settings with the company who supplied the firewall. If this makes no difference continue with the following steps.

If you are to connect to the Internet using other applications such as Microsoft Outlook Express or MSN Messenger this indicates that your firewall has not been configured correctly.

3. Ensure that you are currently connected to the Internet by running a ping connection test. This can be done by clicking on Start and then Run and then type command (making sure to remove anything else from the field) and then click OK. This will bring up your DOS Window.

Type ping 127.0.0.1 into the black command prompt and then press ENTER on your keyboard. If you receive four replies, go to step 6. If you are not able to ping double-check your connection settings.

4. If you are running Internet Explorer from version 6 onwards some files can become corrupted causing this problem and can be resolved by running a quick repair. In order to establish which version of Internet Explorer you are running click Help and then About Internet Explorer which will display your version number.

5. In order to repair it follow these steps:

Click Start and then Control Panel (or Settings and then Control Panel)

Double click on Add-Remove Programs

Highlight Internet Explorer

Click Change-Remove tab

Select Repair Internet Explorer

Then click OK to confirm this

Once this has been completed restart your computer and then test your connection to see if you can now view webpages.

6. This problem can sometimes come about due to corruption of TCP/IP which can be refreshed or reinstalled depending on your operating system.

If you are running Windows XP you can simply refresh your TCP/IP by clicking on Start then Run and then typing command and then click OK. In the black command prompt type in netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and then press ENTER on your keyboard. It should return back to a blank line into which you can type exit to close the command prompt.

If you are running any other operating system (Windows 98, ME, 2000), make sure you have your Windows installation CD which came with your computer and then follow these steps to reinstall and configure TCP/IP:

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.

On the Configuration tab, click Add, click Protocol, and then click Add.

In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft, in the Network Protocols box, and then click TCP/IP.

Click OK two times, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer. If you are not prompted to restart your computer, do so manually.

7. You can restore your computer to an earlier date in case something has been corrupted since last time you connected.

NOTE Any updates or software installations you have made since the method for undertaking a system restore will differ depending on your operating system (To determine which operating system you are running click on Start and you will see the name in a blue bar along the left hand side of the Start Menu):

Windows 98 This can only be run in MS-DOS mode so you will have to click on Start then Shut Down and then select Restart in MS-DOS mode. The computer will then start with a black screen with a prompt like C:\WINDOWS> where you must type in scanreg /restore and then press Enter on your keyboard. This will then restore.

Windows ME Click on Start then Programs then Accessories then System Tools and then select System Restore. If you have enabled System Restore in the past this will work otherwise you may receive a message advising that it has been turned off in which case no restore points will have been made. In this case go to Step 7.

Windows 2000 This is not possible in Windows 2000, please go to Step 7.

Windows XP Click on Start then Programs then Accessories then System Tools and then select System Restore. You will then see a Restore Wizard which will prompt you to Restore your computer to an earlier time.

With this option selected click Next. You will then see a calendar with bold dates whenever a restore point had been created. Select a date for a system checkpoint when you were able to view webpages and then click on Next.

Bear in mind you will lose any changes you may have made after this date including new files, software or updates. You can now confirm the System restore by clicking on Next which may take a while to restart your system with the preconfigured settings. Then retest your connection for the ability to view webpages.

8. As a last option you can reinstall Internet Explorer by downloading it from the Microsfoft website.

The Nortel VPN Client creates the secure connection for VPN users into a private network.

Once you log in through iPass and receive the iPass screen, you are now authenticating through the Nortel VPN, and not iPass.

If this is your first time connecting, or your pin has been reset, you will enter only your username, and token ID.

The PIN field should be blank. If you have connected before, you will enter the username, PIN, and token ID.

Once you are ready to connect you will click the Connect button. You may be asked if you want to save the connection if this is your first time connecting. (Note you should choose YES)

If it is not your first time, or the PIN has not been reset, you will simply be connected at this point.

Enter a 4 to 8 digit pin in the response field. Once the pin is accepted you will enter the PIN plus Token ID on subsequent connections.

What do I do when my dialup has intermittent network connectivity?

What do I do if I reside in a rural area, and am constantly having problems connecting; when the modem tries to connect, it appears to be retraining continuously and then it either connects at a poor connection rate, or fails to connect at all.

Due to the location, it may be necessary to lower the speed you connect at, as your modem is unable to maintain the faster V90 speeds.

If you are running Windows 95/98/ME, just add the appropriate modem string from the list below.
To find out what type of modem you have installed, click on Start, Settings, Control Panel then Modems.

To add the Extra String to your modem, double click on My Computer, then Dial up Networking (for Windows ME, Dial up Networking is located in the Control Panel).

Right click on your Orcon connection.

Left click on Properties.

Click on the Configure button lower down.

Click on the Connection tab along the top.

Click the Advanced button lower down.

Type the appropriate string for your modem in the field for Extra String.

If you are running Windows 2000/XP, to find out what type of modem you have installed, double click on My Computer, then Control Panel.

Double click on the Phone and Modem options icon.

Click on the Modems tab along the top.

Click on the Properties button lower down.

Click on the Advanced tab along the top.

Type the appropriate string for your modem in the field for Extra Initialization String.

Note If you are unable to connect after adding the below extra string, then this is not the right string for you.

If you are using Windows 95 and 98, you will need to restart your computer after adding the extra string, or you will get Error 630 when trying to connect without restarting your computer.

The Synchronization Filter feature requires you to be using a Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account. Synchronization filters allow you to choose which items are downloaded or kept in your Offline Folder files (.ost). The .ost file is used when you are working offline or if you use Cached Exchange.

How to Determine if a Synchronization Filter is on
In the Navigation Pane, select a folder.
If a filter is turned on, Synchronization Filter Applied will appear in the status bar.

Multiple Filters Applied indicates that both a synchronization filter and a view filter have been applied.

To Create a Synchronization Filter
1. In the Navigation Pane, right click the folder you want to filter, and then click Properties.

2. Click the Synchronization tab, and then under Filtered Synchronization, click Filter.

3. Do one of the following:
* To filter by using additional criteria such as a category or importance level, click the More Choices tab, and then select the options you want.

* To filter by using additional or custom fields, click the Advanced tab, and then select the options you want.

The next time the folder is synchronized, any new or modified items in the .ost file will be uploaded, all items matching the filter will be downloaded, and items that do not match the filter will be removed from the local copy.

Note: Filters apply only to the selected folder. You must add a filter to each folder you want to apply a filter to.

Why do I get No Domain Available when dialing my ISP?

On your Internet Service Providers (ISP) dial connection. Right click the mouse and select the properties button. Click on the Server Type tab and make sure that the Log On To Network box is unchecked.

Why do I seem to be running slowly through my VPN connection?

Try turning off the Software Compression option on your Internet Service Providers (ISP) dial connection as the VPN client has its own compression. Right click the mouse and select the properties button. Click on the Server Type tab and uncheck the Log On To Network box.

I keep getting busy signals when trying to connect to my ISP, what should I do?

Contact your ISP giving the numbers you are trying to connect to. Many times you will find that they can give you an alternate number not published yet that will work just fine. If not, you may need to find another ISP that provides better service.

When configuring the dial icon for my ISP what should I put in the DNS/WINS settings?

Your ISP should supply you with the DNS/WINS settings of your dial connection. Most only give you DNS, in this case just leave the WINS settings blank.

Why when I load the Extranet Client on my PC and Winpoet is installed on my machine it crashes or does not work properly?

There are issues running Winpoet software on the PC with the Nortel Extranet (VPN) Client.

Repair your system boot in safe mode and uninstall the Winpoet Software.

A simple solution is to install the Linksys BEFSR41 hardware router. It has a firmware PPPOE connector, which eliminates Winpoet from the PC and provides the added benefit a NAT firewall for you with the ability to hook up to three other PCs.

A second option is to find a PPPOE Client that does not interfere with VPN Clients.

Are your Cable Modems supported for VPN Access?

Yes you can use cable modems for VPN access. However you must be aware of the following conditions and be able to work within them.

* Some cable modems require that you log into an NT network to get authenticated.

* Some cable modems use a client similar to the Extranet Client for VPN and both will not run at the same time.

* Some cable modem Contracts/Acceptable Use Policies specify that you cannot use them for business purposes or they want to charge you anther fee to use them for business purposes. Make sure you read your contract thoroughly.

* Your Cable modem provider is your ISP. Please see the ISP troubleshooting guide for more information.

Why does my modem seem to perform erratically?

Always make sure that you do not let the operating system select a generic modem. If required go to the appropriate web site for the vendor of the modem and get the updated INF file so that the proper parameters are configured for the modem.

Why do I always seem to get a slower connection speed than others with the same modem?

1. Always check the modem configuration to verify that its maximum speed has been selected.

2. It is common when auto installing modems that the highest speed is not selected automatically.

3. Do not check the box that says run at maximum speed only.

I plugged my modem into the phone line at the hotel or other Hotspot and now it does not work.

Always make sure that the phone line you are plugging into when visiting somewhere is an analog line not a digital one. Plugging into a digital line can permanently damage your modem, requiring a replacement unit. To avoid these situations please contact the local site phone support personnel.

Why cant I get a 56Kb V.90 connection from some locations that I go to?

Here are some of the reasons why you might not get a 56K connection.

1. You are located more than 3 ½ miles from your telephone company's central office (CO).

2. A SLICK or Subscriber Loop System is used in your area.

3. You are calling from a digital PBX system, which creates a Digital to Analog conversion and then an Analog to Digital conversion.

4. Your line contains digital pads or Robbed Bit Signaling (RBS), which can degrade your connection speeds.

5. Your wiring may be of poor quality.

6. Your modem's firmware may not be up to date. Check that your modem has the newest V.90 code installed with all the patches from the vendors web site.

Why can't I get higher speed on my 56K v.90 modem into some NAG?

Here are some possible reasons.

1. A 56k v.90 modem is asymmetric by design where download speed can be as much as 56k but upload speed will be up to 33.6bps. For 56k to work, there must be only one analog to digital (A/D) conversion in your local phone loop. Thus when modems at both ends are analogue, 56k speeds will never be achieved as most PSTN exchanges run digital routing between the exchanges.

2. Some NAG sites use analog phone lines with Cisco and standard 56k modems, and most PCs' dialups use a similar modem. Between the two modems, it limits the download speed to about 33.6kbps maximum.

3. Also, many users might experience lower connection speeds due to other reasons, such as more poor line quality. These factors will also contribute to the quality and speed of the line.

VPN and Your Network Connection Troubleshooting

Having trouble connecting to the Internet at home try these steps before calling for help.

1. Do you have an IP address? Try ipconfig /all. If you do not have an IP address reboot your PC.

If that doesn't work power cycle your Cable/DSL modem and routers and reboot your PC again after the network devices are up and stable. Be sure all of your network cables are plugged in tight.

2. After your PC reboots check that your network adapter is active and packets are flowing. Perform the ipconfig /all check again.

3. Check your connectivity by pinging several Internet sites.

If that does not work ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1.

If that fails, your adapter may not be working or it is not properly configured.

How to check your IP address. From command prompt enter ipconfig /all

As shown below you should see an IP Address and several DNS Server addresses. The domain name system (DNS) is the way that Internet domain names are located and translated into IP addresses and is required for browsing the Internet.

Ping 127.0.0.1 Loopback Test
The loopback test is used to check if the IP stack is responding. If it times out or you get an error the problem may occur if any one or more of the following conditions is true.
* The TCP drivers are corrupted
* The network adapter is not working
* Another service is interfering with IP

Check your network adapter, click the Start menu, Settings, Control Panel, and select Network Connections. Double click on the Local Area Connection or the Wireless Adapter whichever one you are using. Be sure its Connected. If you have multiple network cards disable the one you are not using.

There should be Packets displayed in both the Sent and Received counters. If the Received counter is 0 check that the adapter has an IP address. Select Properties

Click the check boxes for Show icon and Notify me below. A twin PC icon will appear on the lower right portion of the taskbar in the tray area and will flash while sending and receiving packets. You can place your mouse over the icon to get the status and click on it to get more details.

Tracert displays the connection path to the target location and the number of hops. Each hop is the trip from one router to another. Tracert is a handy tool both for understanding where problems are in the network and for determining latency between hops.

Ping is used to determine whether a host exists and is active on the network and can determine the round trip time to the device. You can enter a host name or an IP address if you know it.

If the request times out then the host is not reachable because it's offline or there is a problem with the connection. Try several sites, if none work then ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1

Also, if your DNS is not working or properly configured you can only ping the host with an IP address and you will not be able to browse the Internet.

If you are having intermittent problems perform a ping t for 5 to 6 minutes then hit CTRL C to see the results of the test to determine if you are dropping network packets (lost packets). If you are this usually indicates an ISP problem or Cable/DSL modem problem.

VPN Troubleshooting Error Messages

Error Message

Remote Host not responding or Unable to Resolve the IP address of the Remote Server

Cause This indicates that the Contivity VPN Switch never responded to the connection attempt. The problem could either be with the Contivity switch itself, (switch may be down) or your machine may be having a problem resolving the IP address.
ActionTry pinging your destination name (Example: vpn.something.com). If you received a message that says Request Timed Out from the ping command, call your ISP to make sure that their DNS is functioning correctly.

Error Message

Cause This indicates that the maximum number of users for the account you are using are currently logged on.

Action If you are the only user with VPN to your account, it is possible to get this error if you restarted a connection immediately after losing the dialup connection to your ISP. This is because the Contivity VPN Switch takes up to one hour to determine that your connection has been dropped and log you off from your account.

Cause The User Name or the Password is incorrect for the user name entered.

Action Verify that the User Name you entered is correct and retype the Password before trying the connection again. If you have forgotten your username or password.

This message can result due to a number of different reasons, and there are several recommended actions you can take to try and reconnect.

Cause(s)
If you receive this error before the client connects then something is blocking a necessary port (such as ESP port 50). This can result if your firewall is not configured properly and is restricting the necessary port(s).

If you receive this error during a connection and you suddenly get the error it may mean one of the following.

1. Something closed the connection,

2. The VPN Contivity switch where you were trying to connect to thought your client was down or timed out.

3. Your local ISP did something that interrupted your network connection long enough for the VPN Contivity switch to identify your client was not responding.

4. The VPN Contivity switch that you are connected to has either logged your connection off or the Switch is no longer responding, or a device that does not support IPSEC NAT Traversal is causing the connection failure.

Action(s)
1. Try reestablishing the Contivity connection by clicking the Connect button. If this works, the connection was probably lost due to the Idle Timeout configured on the Contivity VPN Switch.

If no data is transferred through the Contivity connection for a long period of time, 15 minutes or more, the Contivity VPN Switch automatically disconnects the connection.

2. If you were unable to successfully reestablish the Contivity Connection, the dialup connection may be preventing data from traveling between the Contivity VPN Client and the Contivity VPN Switch. Hang up the dialup connection and reconnect before you try to reestablish a connection to the Contivity VPN Switch.

3. If you are still unable to connect to the Contivity VPN Switch, open a Command Prompt and try pinging the Contivity VPN Switch using the host name or address that you specified in the Destination field.
Therefore,if you
1. receive a Destination Unreachable error there is a routing problem at the ISP.

2. receive a Request Timed Out error message, the Contivity VPN Switch is probably not available, and you should contact your Network Administrator.

3. keep getting this message and are unable to connect, then it may indicate that the Contivity VPN Switch is unable to communicate with the client because it is behind some kind of NAT (Network Address Translation) device.

NAT (Network Address Translation) Traversal allows a number of devices on a private network to access the Internet simultaneously without each requiring its own external IP address. Most hotels and airports that provide Internet connectivity use NAT to connect to the Internet.

Cannot Alter Routing Table

Cause Message means the you the user, an application on your machine, or your ISP attempted to change the routing table via an ICMP redirect attempt and it was not successful. The client detects the attempt to make the change, determines its a security breach and shuts down the clients connection.

Any time you make a VPN connection, you cannot change the routing table, because the VPN Client views this as a security risk and you will get disconnected.
Some applications require an ICMP redirection in order to work such as a game or other third party software.

Action If you receive this error and cant connect due to an ICMP redirect attempt, shut down any other applications you are using which may be causing the ICMP redirect attempt.

If it is the ISP that is doing it, you will need to block the ICMP redirect request. You can identify that ICMP redirect has occurred, by seeing a message saying there has been an IP address routing table change.

Receiving Banner Text Information

Cause Message means you are experiencing a Banner Sock issue, and will see a window displaying the Receiving Banner Text message and then get disconnected.

Actions
1. Disable the firewall completely to test. This is a port 500 issue and often means that the you have a personal Firewall that is blocking port 500 or you have a router that does not support IPSEC pass through, and you are connecting to a VPN switch that does not have NAT Traversal enabled.

2. If using wireless, temporarily remove Wireless from the picture and focus on your Ethernet card. Check the Ethernet card speed and duplex parameters and then make sure that the hub, switch, or router that is on the other end has the same parameters. If not, the VPN connection will drop as the link goes up and down, or due to a large number of errors on the port from a duplex and or speed mismatch.

3. Firewall that blocks the connection, such that the system will crash. (This will rarely happen) NSDF (Norton Symantec Desktop Firewall) and NSPF (Norton Symantec Personal Firewall) can do this.

If you do not trust the VPN address of the VPN client, the firewall will cause you to crash. In your Internet browser click on Tools > Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sites > Sites and add the destination VPN address(es) to your trusted sites.

(There are two IP addresses you may need to trust, which depend on the location of the VPN Contivity switch you are trying to connect to.

Create socket failed with 10048.

Cause This problem generally will occur whenever you have another VPN client software installed on the system. The most noted conflicting clients are: AOL, Cisco VPN Client(s), SSH Sentinel and PGP.

What Is Broadband?

Broadband technologies provide high-speed access to the Internet. These technologies are an alternative to dial-up methods that use a traditional analog modem.

The major broadband technologies are:

Cable Modem Service
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service

Cable modem services use the same coaxial
DSL services provide a high-bandwidth connection over the same wires that provide your telephone service. Since DSL uses a different frequency than the phone service, you can use the same line to make phone calls while your PC is connected to the Internet.
With both of these broadband technologies, your PC is always connected to the Internet.

Should I Use Broadband?

The high-speed, “always-on” Internet access provided by broadband technologies offers obvious advantages. And broadband might particularly benefit you if:

You need to be connected to the network for many hours a day from a fixed location.
You have large downloads/uploads to process on a regular basis.
You are a virtual worker who cannot get a reliable phone connection with a decent speed.

However, there are number of issues to consider when deciding if broadband is right for you:

Availability. Cable modem or DSL services are not available in all locations.
Cost. Broadband access is generally more expense than dial-up service. Prices typically range from $40 to $80 monthly depending on your area, your provider, and the specific type of service you need.

Installation Issues

As previously stated, the DSL service typically shares the copper phone line that you already have installed in your home. However with some types of xDSL (such as some IDSL implementations) do not always offer concurrent phone services on the DSL line. You should check with the ISP or phone company providing the service. In any event, DSL service can be configured to run on its own separately installed line.
Your DSL provider will set up a time for the phone company to change or install the line for DSL support. When installing DSL service, you should be aware that:

Your DSL provider might need an IP address supplied by your ISP to properly test the line. Be sure the required IP address is obtained prior to installation time.

When I load the Extranet Client on my PC and Winpoet is installed on my machine it crashes or does not work properly. Whats wrong 2 of 2?

If you have WINPOET, please check with your local ISP to confirm it will work with the Nortel VPN client. If not, or if they are not sure, please do not install the new client, or ask your ISP to find an alternative PPPOE Client that does not interfere with the Nortel VPN Client.

If you decide to use Winpoet with the new Nortel VPN client, Nortel strongly recommends using Winpoet 6.0 or higher. Earlier versions of the Winpoet software are known to cause conflicts with the Nortel VPN client.

If you have Winpoet on your PC and experience problems (i.e. with an earlier version prior to 6.0) the following 8 steps will safely uninstall the Winpoet Software from your PC and repair your system to boot properly.

1. Login to Safe Mode

2. Login under Admin profile

3. Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall Extranet Client. Do NOT reboot at the prompt.

4. Check to see if Winpoet adapter is installed. If so remove it.

5. Go to device manager/network adapters. Right click Winpoet or Winport adapter. Uninstall.

6. Go to Admin Tools./Services and disable Winpoet-over-ethernet.

7. Reboot PC.

8. Reinstall the extranet VPN client.

An alternative solution is to install the Linksys BEFSR41 hardware router. It has a firmware PPPOE connector, which eliminates the need of Winpoet from the PC.

Cannot VPN Network Shares After establishing a Contivity VPN Connection.

Causes
1. WINS Server may not be configured for IPsec connections on the Contivity VPN Switch.

2. Your system may be setup for a different domain than the one on the remote network.

Actions
A. For the first problem, validate that the Contivity VPN Client has been configured with a WINS Server.

1. Follow the steps outlined above under Problems with Name Resolution using DNS Services to run IPCONFIG at a Command Prompt on NT 4.0 and to run WINIPCFG on Windows 95.

2. Verify that a Primary WINS Server is listed under the section for the adapter named IPSecShm on NT 4.0 and on Windows 95.

3. Verify that a Primary WINS Server is listed in WINIPCFG for the Contivity VPN Client adapter.

4. If there is no Primary WINS Server listed, notify the Network Administrator that the Contivity VPN Switch may not be properly configured.

B. For the second problem, skip the initial domain logon when Windows 95 starts and select Log on to the Remote Domain under the Options menu of the Contivity VPN Client dialog box.

1. You will then be prompted to log onto the domain of the remote network after the Contivity VPN connection is made.

2. This is the recommended method for users with Docking Station configurations.

3. Alternatively on both NT 4.0 and Windows 95, change your workstation to be a member of a Workgroup instead of a Domain.

1. From the Start Menu select Settings and then Control Panel.

2. In the Control Panel, double-click on the Icon labeled Network. The Network Control Panel applet will open. Select the Identification tab.

3. On Windows 95, the entries on the Identification page can be modified directly, while on NT 4.0 it is necessary to click the Change button to change the entries. Change to use a Workgroup and verify that the Computer name does not match one that may be on the remote network.

4. The name for the Workgroup is not important, so enter anything. Click OK to save the changes and reboot the machine.

When accessing a resource on the remote Domain, if you are prompted for a username and password, you will need to have a Domain name precede your user ID. For example, if your user ID is JoeS and you are accessing a machine on the remote Domain named CORP, you would enter your username as CORP\JoeS.

Cannot VPN Web Servers on the Internet after Establishing a Contivity VPN Client Connection.

Cause This is normal and occurs as a result of having all network traffic passed through the corporate network. Typically, firewalls and other security measures on the corporate network will limit your VPN to the Internet.

Action The Contivity VPN Switch administrator can set up a default route on the Switch to forward traffic to the Internet. If this default route is not configured, you will need to disconnect the Contivity connection to web browse the Internet through your ISP connection.

This is a known issue due to Microsoft that can occur when using cached credentials behind a NAT firewall. The problem will occur for some users, but not others. It can occur regardless of the VPN client you are using. Some users may only experience this problem after upgrading to a new VPN client, but restoring the old client does not necessarily fix the problem. You may try uninstalling the VPN Client and then reinstalling.

VPN Problems with Name Resolution using DNS services

Cause 1 A DNS server may not be configured for IPsec connections on the Contivity VPN Switch.
Action 1 Validate that the Contivity VPN client has been configured with a DNS entry. For NT 4.0, open a Command Prompt and enter IPCONFIG /ALL. Verify that a DNS server entry is listed. For Windows 95, from the Start menu on the taskbar, select Run and enter WINIPCFG. Select "Contivity VPN Adapter" from the pull down list of Adapters, then click More Info. Record the information displayed under DNS Server entry and verify it with the network administrator.

Cause 2 The hostname being resolved has both a public and a private IP address. This is commonly referred to as a Split-Horizon DNS.
Action 2 Open a Command Prompt and ping the host you are trying to reach with a fully-qualified hostname (for example, www.vpnclient.com). If you receive a response, verify that the IP address returned on the first line (for example, www.vpnclient.com [207.78.33.329] is an IP address from the remote corporate network. If it is not, notify your network administrator that the internal hostname should be modified so that it is not the same as the external hostname.

Cause 3 The retail release (a.k.a. "release 1") of Windows 95 contained a bug that prevented use of more than one DNS server. This problem was fixed in OS Release2.
Action 3 If you are using a release of Windows earlier than Release 2 of Windows 95, then you need to upgrade.

2. Do you have the most current version of the Contivity Extranet Access client?

3. Have you recently installed any new software or hardware?

4. Were any hardware or software changes made since your VPN connection was last working?

5. Have you scanned your computer for viruses?

If you are still experiencing problems, try uninstalling/removing the following items.

1. Disable your firewall, anti-virus software and any other maintenance or Security programs installed. Try to connect.

2. Remove your router (Linksys, D-link, Cisco, Netgear, etc.) from your configuration. Connect your PC directly to your Internet connection. This is accomplished by connecting the cable coming out of your DSL/Cable modem, directly into your network card or USB connector. If successful, the problem might be your router's setup or firmware. Refer to your manufacturer's website or documentation for troubleshooting your router or contact the Vendor directly for support. You must upgrade your firmware. Please beware even though you might have just recently purchased your router, it might have been packaged with an older version of the software.

3. Enable your router, firewall/internet security programs one at a time.
Cable/DSL users: If you have a dial-up modem installed on your PC, try to test using a dialup connection. Either use dialup to an ISP and then use VPN.

They cannot coexist, and it is not supported. The two virtual adapters installed with each client will conflict with each other. There is a utility on the new Cisco clients that will uninstall a Nortel® client if found by the Cisco VPN Unity Client install program. All other VPN Clients require manual removal of the Nortel® client or any other client.

I installed Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) so that all of my systems can reach the Internet. Now my VPN client no longer works.

The reason for this is that the Microsoft ICS uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to get the Internet connection, and NAT, which may not support IPSec connections.

The only way around this currently, is to make the unit running the ICS be the one you run your VPN connection from. Any downstream unit will not be functional for VPN.

Flagging Messages for Follow Up Folder

* Problem

Follow Up folder will not save Messages when flagged

* Solution

The Follow Up Folder will highlight and save messages received in the Inbox Folder that you want to flag for follow up later and for no other purpose. It is intended for messages received. There are some tricks to make it easier to follow up on Sent Items.

A flagged sent message is intended for follow up for the Recipient Inbox only.

A flagged sent message will not automatically save in the Senders Follow Up Folder if you flag them right before you send it.

A flagged sent message will not automatically save in the Senders Follow Up Folder but will pop up with a reminder window for the Recipient only if you flag it with a date/time reminder right before you send it and it will appear in RED in the Senders Sent Items Folder for quick view for follow up later.

A flagged sent message will automatically save in the Senders Follow Up Folder if you flag it after you send it and it is in the designated Sent Items Folder. Left click on the flag and it will save in the Follow Up Folder. Right click on the flag will provide preferences.

Sent messages, whether flagged or not, will only save in the Sent Items Folder unless you change the designation where the folder for sent items are saved. As you can see, the Follow Up Folder is not an option for this feature. You need to look in your designated Sent Items Folder for follow up messages, not your Follow Up Folder.

A saved unsent flagged message for follow up will only appear in the Drafts Folder. If it is flagged with or without a date/time expiration, it will only have the reminder on the top task pane. It will not save in the Follow Up Folder. If it is flagged with a date/time expiration, a pop up reminder window will not display however, the message will highlight in RED at the designated time and date and you will need to go to the Drafts Folder to see it.

After you send/receive a message that you want flagged, in the Sent Items Folder/Inbox Folder, open the message you just sent/received and follow the steps 3-6 below. The Follow Up Folder will highlight and save the messages that you flagged for follow up later.

You can also flag a message without opening the message.
1. Right click on the message received/sent in your Sent Items Folder/Inbox Folder that you want to follow up on later
2. Select Follow up
3. Select the color of the flag you want to use
4. Now the e-mail has that color flag
5. To make it easy to find all your follow-up e-mail, they are also listed in the For Follow Up folder
6. To clear the flag, select Follow up / Clear Flag

You can also set up a reminder time to follow up.
1. Right click on the message received/sent in your Inbox Folder/Sent Items Folder that you want to follow up on later
2. Select Follow up
3. Select Add Reminder

4. Set Flag to: Preference

5. Set Due by - And time
6. Set Flag color: Preference
7. OK

Note: Flagging a message t send with a date/time will appear only in the Senders top task pane of the message. After it is sent, a pop up window will appear for the Recipient at the designated date/time.

8. On any message, in the side bar frame where all the messages in that folder are displayed, without opening the message you can click on the flag next to the title of the message and it will highlight so that it is easily recognizable for follow up. It will also save in the Follow Up folder.

How to Deal with the Blue Screen of Death

There are thousands of causes for blue screens, and there are thousands of different error messages in the BSODs, but they fall into three general categories, in order of frequency - operating system file corruption, hardware failures, and application software conflicts.

The only way to determine the specific cause is, usually, to look up the specific error code contained within the blue screen of death.

Reason out the potential cause of why it happened:

• What were you doing immediately prior to the BSOD?

• What is the complete and exact error code?

• Is the BSOD caused by a specific action, and is it repeatable?

• How many times has it happened? Once, twice, thirty times?

• Is the error message exactly the same every time?

• How frequently does it happen? Once a day, a week, a month?

• What software were you using before it happened?

• Did you download something from an unsecured source just recently?

Almost all BSOD issues will require someone to physically analyze the PC before the issue can be resolved, so please don't imply that a quick fix is available for BSOD errors.

Usually you will get an error code that specifies:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select safe mode.

Reboot your computer.

If you get a send message report, it sends all of your private information to Microsoft.

Blue Screen of Death can also cause your Operating System to slow down. Make sure you have the latest versions of Anit Virus and Spyware Destroyers and run them frequently. This will also help prevent Operating System corruption. Check you Performance in Task Manager.

Running frequent Disk Cleanup and Defragmenters will also help prevent Operating System corruption.

Some programs run through a series of Java applets. In order for Java Scripts to Run Properly, Your Internet Explorer Settings must be Correct

1. Uninstall pop-up blockers software
Example: Yahoo Toolbar and/or Google Toolbar etc.
From Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs

2. From the Add/Remove Programs list, select Yahoo Toolbar.

• Click Change/Remove

3. Activate Java script files

• In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab
• Scroll down to the Java and Microsoft VM sections
• Uncheck Use Java for XXX Applet
• Check the following:
• Java Console enabled
• Java Logging enabled
• JIT complier for virtual machine enabled
• Click OK
• Close Internet Browser Window and re-launch

NOTE: If VM is not installed on the PC, it will need to be installed.

4. Clear Cache Files

• In Internet Browser Window, click Tools/Internet Options. The Internet Options dialog box is displayed
• Click the General tab
• Click the Delete Files button

5. Adjust your security settings

• In Internet Browser Window, click Tools/Internet Options. The Internet Options dialog box is displayed
• Click the Security tab
• Click on Local Intranet or Internet

• Click sites
• Click advanced

What To Do When a Virus is Detected on Your PC

Norton Symantec AntiVirus, protects our network by continuously scanning your computer's boot sector, memory, files and email attachments for known viruses. When such a scan detects a virus on your computer, you receive a notification:

The message gives information about the virus, the location where it was found, and also what action was taken. In most cases, the antivirus software will attempt to clean and delete the virus from the infected file and quarantine it, if unsuccessful, so that the virus cannot do any damage to your PC or spread to other PCs. Since quarantined files remain on your computer, they will continue to trigger virus alerts on subsequent virus scans and should be dealt with.

When you receive an alert as described above, close the notification message and then launch Symantec AntiVirus from your System Tray (usually found in the bottom right corner of your screen at the end of the taskbar) by double-clicking the yellow shield icon:

The window that opens shows you general information about the status of the antivirus software, for example, the parent server from which you receive updates, the program version, the date it was last updated, and if there are quarantined files on your PC:

If you see in the right half of the window that there are items listed under Quarantine: (1), expand View in the left pane (2) and select Quarantine (3) to display a list of the quarantined files:

Select All Items from the drop down (4) to display all quarantined files. Highlight each file (5) listed (hold the Ctrl key while you click each item to select more than one file) and then press the red X (6) to delete them from the Quarantine.

Symantec will verify the files and confirm that they can indeed be deleted. Press Start Delete to permanently delete them:

After the files are successfully deleted, press Close and Exit on each subsequent window until you have exited Symantec AntiVirus.

Note: An infected computer poses a serious threat to your network’s security and stability and should be taken seriously.

I am Unable to obtain an IP address while Hotelling

When working remotely from a Hotel (Hotelling), you must launch your Internet explorer first to try and obtain an IP address. If you just launch VPN, you won't have obtained an IP address, and VPN may fail. Disable your firewall, as the hotel may recommend.

After installing v8.0 of AOL, Ive experienced problems with my connections to my Network. Is there a known fix?

Users may experience problems with Windows Outlook email. You must create two separate profiles; one profile as a Remote Connection (POP3) account for your AOL Internet email and another profile for a local LAN connection to your corporate Network email.

Here's how to do it:

1. Go to Start, Control Panel, Mail, Services, Show Profiles and Add the second profile.

2. Make sure the button "Prompt for a profile to be used" under General tab of MS Outlook properties is selected.

3. Disable the ATWPKT2 driver. (The files ATKPKT2.SYS and ATKPKT2.VXD are located in the AOL directory under \PROGRAM_FILES\COMMON_FILES.)

Below are instructions on how to remove and add TCP/IP for Windows 2000. (Refer to your operating system's help screens, web support and/or documentation for instructions, if you are not using Windows 2000.) Please be sure, no matter which operating system you use, that you elect to restart when finished (as prompted) or restart between each process.

For Windows 2000 you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure.
Remove TCP/IP

1. Open Network and Dial-up Connections, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.

2. Right-click any network connection, and then click Properties.

3. On the General tab (for a local area connection) or the Networking tab (all other connections), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Uninstall.

4. In the Uninstall Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) dialog box, click Yes.

Install TCP/IP

5. Open Network and Dial-up Connections. (Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.)

6. Right-click the network connection for which you want to install and enable TCP/IP, and then click Properties.

7. On the General tab (for a local area connection) or the Networking tab (all other connections), if Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not in the list of installed components, then do the following:
A. Click Install.
B. Click Protocol and then click Add.
C. In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
D. Verify that the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box is selected, and then click OK.

TCP/IP is installed as the default network protocol if network adapter hardware was detected during Windows 2000 Setup. You only need to follow these instructions if the TCP/IP default selection was overridden during Setup.

I am having problems with my VPN connection.

Try isolating the problem by process of elimination.
1. Is your Internet connection to the public Internet working properly?

2. Do you have the most current version of the Contivity Extranet Access client?

3. Have you recently installed any new software or hardware?

4. Were any hardware or software changes made since your VPN connection was last working?

5. Have you scanned your computer for Viruses?

If you are still experiencing problems, try uninstalling or removing the following items.
1. Disable your firewall, anti-virus software and any other maintenance or Security programs installed. Try to connect.

2. Remove your router (Linksys, D-link, Cisco, Netgear, etc.) from your configuration. Connect your PC directly to your Internet connection. This is accomplished by connecting the cable coming out of your DSL/Cable modem, directly into your network card or USB Connector.

If successful, the problem might be your router's setup or firmware. Refer to your manufacturer's website or documentation for troubleshooting your router or contact the Vendor directly for support. You must upgrade your firmware. Please beware even though you might have just recently purchased your router, it might have been packaged with an older version of the software.

3. Enable your router, firewall/internet security programs one at a time.

Cable/DSL users: If you have a dial-up modem installed on your PC, try to test using a dialup connection. Either use dialup to an ISP and then use VPN or dialup directly into your Network.

There are known issues running Winpoet software on the PC with the Nortel Extranet (VPN) Client.
To repair your system, boot in safe mode and uninstall the Winpoet Software.
A simple solution is to have users install the Linksys BEFSR41 hardware router. It has a firmware PPPOE connector, which eliminates Winpoet from the PC and provides the added benefit a NAT firewall for the user with the ability to hook up to three other PCs.
A second option is to find a PPPOE Client that does not interfere with VPN Clients.

Why cant I get higher speed on my 56K v.90 modem into some NAG sites?

A 56k v.90 modem is asymmetric by design, so download speed can be as much as 56k but upload speed will be only up to 33.6bps. For 56k to work, there must be only one analogue to digital (A/D) conversion in your local phone loop. Thus when modems at both ends are analogue, 56k speeds will never be achieved as most PSTN exchanges run digital routing.
Some NAG sites use analogue phone lines with Cisco and standard 56k modems, while most PCs dialing up use a similar modem. Between both the modems, it limits the download speed to about 33.6kbps maximum.
At the same time, many users might experience lower connection speeds due to other reasons, such as more poor line quality. These factors will also contribute to the quality and speed of the line.

AOL sometimes replaces the TCP/IP Winsock driver, causing your PC perform erratically or not at all. To fix this problem:
- Delete all references to TCP/IP from the network neighborhood properties.
- Reboot the system.
- Add the Microsoft TCP/IP protocol back in.
This will automatically add TCP/IP to all adapters and you should be functional again.

When you dial into the Network Access Gateway you are normally on a segment without a master browser, which is how units are displayed in the Network Neighborhood.
This does not mean that you cannot access the unit however. If the unit you are trying to access is a member of the corporate WINS structure and you have configured your remote unit per the configuration instructions, WINS will automatically resolve the units IP address when you Map a drive in Explorer. The key to this is to know the computer name and share name that you require before starting the process.

While Adobe is open:

There is no backup for NetMeeting and the directory cannot be restored. Directory service works by re-registering the current IP address on the directory.

Treo - How to Perform a Soft Reset

A soft reset is similar to restarting a computer. If your Treo is not responding or you have trouble synchronizing with your computer, a Soft Reset may help.

Soft Resets usually do not affect your personal data on your device, unless your battery is extremely low. If you see battery warnings, change or charge your batteries immediately, even if there is an error message on the screen.

A Soft Reset is the most useful trick in your toolbox for fixing a variety of issues.

• Unscrew the stylus tip to access the reset tool

• Use the reset tool to gently press the reset button on the back of your Treo

Note: On the Treo 650, the reset button will be under the battery casing

Nortel VPN - Unable to Resolve IP Host Address for iPASS

If You are Unable to Resolve IP Host Address follow these steps.

Are you connecting with high-speed (DSL) or modem (telephone)?

Are you at Home or Hotel?

Click on Start --> Run and type CMD in the field and hit enter (or ok)

At the DOS Prompt type: ipconfig /release and hit enter

Now type: ipconfig /renew and hit enter - confirm if the IP Address changed

If yes, logon to iPASS once more - Does this resolve the problem? If NO:

If you are at Home

Is there another computer at home (Personal PC) that is connected to the router?

Shut the router/modem off and turn the laptop off (in an effort to release the IP Address) turn the router/ modem back on.

Turn the laptop back on and logon to iPASS once more.

Does this resolve the problem?

If NO,
a. Unplug the router and plug it into a separate outlet.
b. Try to logon again to iPASS.

If you are at a Hotel

Is there a consent form to be completed for access?

If YES,
double-click on the Internet Explorer

This will bring up the web page for the Hotel (home page)

Complete/submit the consent page

Launch iPASS.

If you are still unable to access iPASS open a web browser page (click on your internet browser icon)

Click on Tools --> Internet Options --> Connection tab --> Settings button and remove the check from the proxy server box to use a proxy server. This will disable the proxy settings.

Click ok until you exit the internet options dialog box. Try to logon to iPASS once more.
