What is Cisco Long-Reach Ethernet Networking?
The Cisco Long-Reach Ethernet (LRE) broadband networking solution is the industry's first end-to-end product line for delivering 5-15 Mbps performance over existing Category 1/2/3 wiring. With Ethernet-like performance that reaches up to 5,000 feet, LRE enables simultaneous voice, video and data applications, such as high-speed Internet access, video streaming and IP telephony.

Cisco LRE is a cost-effective, easy-to-deploy technology for service providers to use in equipping multiunit buildings (MxU) and enterprise campus environments with broadband access. MxU buildings include hotels, multidwelling unit (MDU) housing, and multitenant unit (MTU) office buildings.

Key Benefit
Easy-to-deploy and low cost: Because the Cisco LRE solution runs over a building's existing telephone-grade wiring (Category 1/2/3) and is based on Ethernet, it is a low-cost solution that delivers high-speed broadband access without the time, expense and inconvenience of having to rewire the entire facility with Ethernet-grade cabling (Category 5).

Extends the distance of Ethernet: LRE also overcomes the distance limitations of traditional Ethernet (100 meters) by providing Ethernet-performance at up to 15 Mbps and distances up to 5,000 feet (1,524 meters).

Enhanced broadband services: LRE enables service providers to deliver an unprecedented number and variety of new, revenue-generating broadband services to users-services that integrate voice, video and data, such as high-speed Internet access, video-on-demand, IP telephony, Internet gaming, multimedia, secure access to virtual private networks (VPNs), office productivity applications, distance learning/training, and more.

Applications
Delivering "last-mile" metropolitan-area network (MAN) service is made more feasible with LRE. LRE technology provides far more bandwidth in the "last mile" than has previously been available, and this added bandwidth, along with increased deployment of fiber to buildings, will remove the bottleneck from the last mile. For instance, service providers can offer advanced services, such as high-definition television (HDTV), a technology that has largely stalled due to unusable bandwidth.

Multiunit building (MxU) owners of hotels, multidwelling units (MDUs) and multitenant units (MTUs) can make their properties more attractive and create additional revenue by offering the high-speed connections to drive increasingly complex Internet-based applications with sophisticated video, graphics, and audio. Residents, telecommuters and business travelers increasingly require secure, high-speed broadband connections for services like VPN, high-speed Internet access, video-on-demand, IP telephony, multimedia entertainment, and office productivity applications.

Enterprise campus buildings like manufacturing, education and medical facilities can use LRE to easily provide high-speed connectivity throughout their buildings for monitoring test equipment, providing online training, connecting classrooms, or monitoring the equipment in a patient's room.
